How to Submit Handwritten Homework as a PDF From Your Phone

A handwritten page captured by a phone and turned into a PDF

Your math solutions are on paper, the deadline is at midnight and the learning platform only accepts one PDF. This is now routine for students everywhere, and teachers see every possible version of it: sideways pages, photos of the kitchen table, eight separate images, a 60 MB file. Making a clean submission takes about five minutes once you know the steps, and it makes your work easier to read and to grade.

Before you take any photos

  • Write clearly with a dark pen or a soft pencil. Light pencil disappears in photos.
  • Write your name and the page number on each sheet, top right. If pages get mixed up, both you and your teacher can sort them.
  • Use one side of the paper if you can. Ink showing through from the back makes photos messy.
  • Find a plain, contrasting surface, such as a dark table or a large book, and the brightest spot in the room, ideally near a window during the day.

Photograph each page properly

  1. Lay the page flat. Press curled edges down with a book or a ruler outside the frame.
  2. Hold the phone directly above the page, parallel to it. Shooting at an angle makes the bottom of the page look smaller.
  3. Avoid shadows: do not stand between the light and the page. Turn off the flash if it creates a bright glare.
  4. Fill the frame with the page, leaving a small border.
  5. Tap to focus on the text, then check the photo by zooming in. If you cannot read it, your teacher cannot either.

A document scanner mode in your camera app or notes app can straighten and crop pages automatically. Use it if you have it. Otherwise ordinary photos work fine.

Combine the photos into one PDF

With JPG to PDF you can do this in your phone's browser without installing an app:

  1. Open the page and choose your photos from the gallery.
  2. Check the order. Drag the thumbnails, or use the arrow buttons, so page 1 comes first.
  3. Choose A4 or US Letter as the page size so every page looks consistent. A small margin looks tidy.
  4. Press Convert to PDF and download the file.

Phone photos taken sideways are rotated automatically, so pages should come out upright. Your photos are processed on your phone and not uploaded to us, so nothing of yours ends up on a stranger's server. For more detail on page sizes and devices, see how to combine photos into one PDF.

Fix mistakes without starting over

  • A page in the wrong place, or one sideways: open the PDF in Organize PDF, drag it into position or rotate it, and save.
  • A blurry page: retake that photo, make a one-page PDF and add it with Merge PDF, then remove the old page.
  • An extra photo you did not mean to include: remove it in Organize PDF or Remove Pages.

Keep the file a sensible size

Each phone photo can be 3 to 6 MB, so a ten-page assignment may come to 40 MB or more. Many learning platforms limit uploads, and even when they do not, a heavy file is slow for your teacher to open.

Run the finished PDF through Compress PDF on the Balanced level. Handwriting stays readable while the size usually drops a lot. Check one page at full zoom afterward. If the writing is fuzzy, use the Light level instead.

Name it and submit

Use a file name your teacher can sort: Lastname-Firstname-Math-HW5.pdf is far better than IMG_4821.pdf or homework.pdf. If your school has a naming rule, follow it exactly.

Before you press Submit, open the PDF once more and scroll through every page. Check that all pages are there, the order is right, and nothing is cut off. Then upload, and look for the confirmation message or email. If the platform shows a preview of your submission, glance at it.

If something goes wrong at the last minute

  • The upload fails: check the size and the file name, then try another browser or Wi-Fi network. Our guide to rejected PDF uploads lists the usual causes.
  • You are about to miss the deadline: submit what you have, then email your teacher immediately with the complete file attached and a short explanation. A timestamped email shows good faith.
  • Your phone runs out of space: delete the original photos only after you have checked the PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Can I turn photos of my homework into a PDF without an app?

Yes. Open JPG to PDF in your phone's browser, choose the photos, put them in order and convert. Nothing needs to be installed.

Why is my homework PDF so big?

Phone photos are large. Compress the PDF with the Balanced level, which keeps handwriting readable and makes the file much smaller.

How do I fix a page that is upside down in my PDF?

Open the PDF in Organize PDF or Rotate PDF, turn the page and save a new copy.

Should I submit separate images or one PDF?

One PDF, unless your teacher asks for images. A single file keeps the pages in order and is easier to grade.
