What Is a SHA-256 Hash?

SHA-256 is a cryptographic hash function that converts any input text into a fixed 64-character hexadecimal string (256 bits). It is part of the SHA-2 family and is currently the most widely used general-purpose secure hash algorithm, used in TLS certificates, blockchain systems, and secure checksums.

Like all hash functions, SHA-256 is deterministic (the same input always produces the same output) and collision-resistant in practice, meaning it is currently computationally infeasible to find two different inputs that produce the same hash.
